Summer Postcard.

2015 is almost over and it is time to gather all the tiny bits and bobs I did over the past few months.
I visited Germany, Canada and Barcelona in the summer holiday. It might be the most active summer I have ever had. And I made a few postcard dedicate to these places after my trip.

I collect imagery. Most of them go on my wall or sketchbook but this time I drew on it. I found this when I was in Bauhaus, Dessau.

My friend and I.

This is also another drawing on found image, a postcard I bought in Calgary, Canada.

This sum up my trip to Barcelona(I miss the food).

IS X'MAS.

A week before the holiday started, I went to have a little try on woodcut relief printing. Since it's about christmas time, it seems natural to make christmas theme prints (with a personal touch/love on it).

The making of Manifesto.

Our group project has come to an end. After the animation we did, we were asked to produce a manifesto for our characters.

Since we spent some time working together, the second project seems to came alone a lot smoother. We were all aware of the disconnection in our last animation, so this time we're all agree that coherence is the aim of this project.

We had to make sure we have the same (similar) drawing style within our manifesto. So we set a key drawing tool, which is black fine-line pen because we think it will print out well and show the maximum details.

Other then that, we kept referencing on others drawing. Although we all have different drawing style, we pay a lot of attention on the fluent of each page. Also we did lot of discussion on the placement and the page order to make sure each page we did separately will still be connected.
One of the page I did.

At the end, I think we choose a typeface that suits our drawing pretty well (edited by Photoshop). It tied up the whole book and the result looks more complete compare to the last project, which I'm fairly satisfied with.

Fashion Sketch Throwback.

Recently I dug out my old sketchbook and found the sketches that I did in Somerest House at last year LFW. I was being a creep that time standing at the Somerest House, stared at people with my marker and sketchbook. I thought it might be quite interesting to look at. So here are some of them. Enjoy.

THE FINAL ANIMATION.

Here is the final outcome of the animation group project.

Actually I'm quite happy for the final outcome. Of course it is not the most finely edited animation but I think it shown a right amount of characteristic on each character. Even it's a bit awkward, to me it's fun to watch.

Enjoy.

MOVING IMAGE MAKING.

After the costume I made earlier, here is another project base on the same character. We have 7 group mates and we decided to do individual clip of our own character and link them together as a held animation.

I choose to make stop motion with clay and paper. I keep it really simple and clean to match my character design. Since I think a too complicated background will wash out the focus on my monster.

Here is a test clip I did with a roughly made puppet.
I found the lighting of the clip wasn't very good, also the scene was a bit bumpy.
Therefore I made a new one.
I tried to add more detail on my puppet by add a bit more layers and shading.

I didn't use a camera of the shooting.
So I built a mini tripod of my Phone, it kept the scene more steady and smooth and work surprisingly well.

Costume making.

So I changed my design for a few time. In other to make the character looks less 'human-like', I simplify the creature's figure by not adding any arms and legs. The main focus will be on top of the creature's head with a huge eye at the center.

The structure was basing on an umbrella that wrapped with a piece of duvet cover.
It could be 'wear' easily but the downside is I can't really see in the costume.

I also attached a basket and a food cover on top of the umbrella because I want to use more found objects instead of craft everything from scratch. Conceded that I only have two days to make the costume.

To finish the costume, I got these colorful plastic strips at the pound shop and started sticking them on a piece of tape one-by-one. This was a serious time-consuming method and to be honest I kind of regret that I spend a huge amount of time on this process. I did finish it at the last minute but it was a rush and I didn't have enough time to add more detail and it was not as polish as I want it to be.

However, all in all the costume looks quite similar with my original design.

The sketch. It is obvious that I didn't have enough time to make a pair of wings...

The final costume.

MOVING IMAGE WORKSHOP

This was the first time I experience the whole process of making stop motion. Although it was just a short introduction, I got a chance to try out the software and got a brief idea of how it works. Also we managed to make the short video (9 seconds) at the end and it turn out to be quite interesting I think.
