So I did an illustration dedicated to an article from the Guardian. It talks about the situation of people in Britain hoarded house which leak to the problem of squatting.
To illustrate the difference between the people who hoard housing and the one who can't afford it, I draw the scene of the supermarket. I try to show the issue by illustrate all the houses that place in the trolley, the empty shelf and the contrast of the scale of both character.
The sketch I did.
The first version. I try the first one by using acrylic but I didn't really like the bright color. Since it suppose to be a negative news, I decided to do another one with ink.
This is the second version by using black ink. Changing the color really brings out the theme that I was going for. It fits the subject with the right atmosphere. I also add a pop of red to highlight the houses that I thought it will communicate the issue better.
After I presented my work I got a few comments on what I could have done to make it better. The hand of the shopper can draw in a better way which I agree, it did looks a bit awkward. Also the black outline for the houses and shelf are unnecessary, just a block of color might look better in this case.
